A Filipino story of true grit and determination.

In 1962, there was a Math teacher, a civil engineer, who wanted to do more for his students. He believed that the best way to uplift and empower the Filipino youth was through technological education.

With meager resources, he founded an engineering school. From a small rented space in a building to another rented school site, the enrolment of the school steadily grew. The going was rough and difficult but he was tough and persevering.

Yellow became the color of the school to let the sun energize the community and fire up the fighting spirit.

And so, one stone at a time, the school was built to become bigger and better. Every graduate on graduation day and every board passer and topnotcher that the school produced were affirmations of the vision to empower the Filipino youth through education.

A FILIPINO STORY OF GRIT AND DETERMINATION

DEMETRIO A. QUIRINO JR. is the math teacher and civil engineer and the TECHNOLOGICAL INSTITUTE OF THE PHILIPPINES is the school he founded FIFTY years ago.

As yellow turns to gold, TIP indeed has reason to celebrate. TIP QC has Autonomous Status and TIP Manila has Deregulated Status from the CHED. And today,TIP stands tall as a leading school in the fields of engineering, information technology, and in all its other academic offerings.

Demetrio A Quirino Jr. always admonished his students not to be ashamed of the struggle. The rigors, the hardship that come a man's way are what strengthen him and define his character. It is the struggle that counts.

TIP is a Filipino story of true grit and determination. And that is the story too of every TIP student and his or her parents.

Education is a priority in every Filipino family but due to financial constraints, education by rotation is resorted to. Children take turns going to school. Every semester and every schoolyear are a struggle.

Very early on, a Filipino child learns from his parents, and later, from TIP, the importance of family, frugality, integrity and resilience in the face of adversity. He learns that it is the struggle that counts, it is what makes life meaningful.

This is the TIP story and the story of the TIP founder and the story of every TIP student.

THE SAME GREAT STORY FOR ALL THREE

A great Filipino story of true grit and determination.

IN CELEBRATION OF TEACHERS

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) which was founded by my husband Demetrio A. Quirino Jr. and me,

I feel that the celebration for this momentous occasion should also be

a celebration of the noble profession of teaching.

Deming and I started out as classroom teachers for many years until

Deming thought he could do more for the Filipino youth by founding a school.

Teachers empower their students with new learnings . . . learnings that will be their guide,

their lighthouse in the storms of their lives and their sun in the highs of their lives.

“To teach is to touch lives forever.” The teachers of TIP and teachers everywhere have touched the lives of students in ways they will never be able to measure.
